Music for the First Half of the ArticleMade by Steve Purcell Sam & Max: Freelance Police started in 1987 as a comic. It covered the surreal and funny adventures of two animal private investigators: Sam, a six-foot tall dog dressed like a stereotypical Film Noir private eye, and Max, a deranged, trigger-happy white rabbit. Sam was always the more laid-back of the two, and usually the voice of reason keeping Max from causing trouble, though Sam's definition of "trouble" could be a bit flimsy at times. In most of their adventures, the two would receive orders from the faceless Commissioner to defuse some bizarre situation, doing so with a combination of mayhem, brute force, and their wits.
The comics eventually spawned a short lived animated series and popular Adventure Games by two different companies (all with Steve Purcell having considerable involvement):
However Sam And Max, despite all the havoc they wreak, are always on the side of good.
However, they often create a bigger mess while solving the problem at hand.
Sam & Max Hit the Road, originally released in 1993 by LucasArts, was a game in the mold of other LucasArts SCUMM engine classics such as Monkey Island. At least two known attempts at sequels were made (one by a third party) and both were canceled, the last being in 2004.
The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police ran for 13 episodes on Fox Kids in 1997.
Soon after the last LucasArts attempt was canceled, their licence to the franchise expired. Steve Purcell awarded the next licence deal to Telltale Games, which was made up of many ex LucasArts people. Since 2006, Telltale has put out three seasons of episodic games: Sam And Max Save The World, Sam And Max: Beyond Time and Space and Sam And Max: The Devil's Playhouse all are Rated E10+ to T though.
Ok now for the cast of three:
SamMusic for the Second Half of the ArticleA member of the Freelance Police, Sam comes off as more level headed and less crazy than his partner Max, but not by much.
Sam is prone to long-winded sentences filled with elaborate terminology. He rarely loses his temper and is able to react to panic-inducing situations with extreme calm. When he does get angry, however, he tends to react in an uncharacteristically savage manner and somewhat ironically, Max that calms him down and prevents him from acting upon his anger.
He also has a very large sweet tooth, as during many of his adventures and assignments he can be seen enjoying a multitude of frozen treats such as popsicles and ice cream sandwiches. However, he is self-conscious about his weight.
Although most of the time he acts like a human, Sam sometimes behaves like a dog. He is prone when he's angry growling, and his sobbing sounds like whining. He seems to have an enhanced sense of smell.
Max Music for the Third Half of the ArticleChaotic, impulsive and indulgent in the extreme, Max is the source of much of the franchise's unique humor. Max is an active member of the Freelance Police along with his long time partner and best friend Sam.
He often refers to himself as a lagomorph, though he also sometimes refers to himself as a rabbit. A rabbit is a type of lagomorph, so these are not mutually exclusive. He enjoys chaos and prefers to solve problems aggressively. He has a slight distaste for the long stories, anecdotes, and sentences that Sam constantly spouts forth, often asking Sam and others not to use various words such as 'ensue' and 'acumen'. He shares Sam's enthusiasm in just about anything, especially if it involves large guns and trouble. He also has very poor hygiene, as he sometimes tastes his own belly button lint, and once had a large "suspicious growth" behind his ear. Sam has commented on his pungent bodily odors on more than one occasion. Both Sam and Max have also commented on the obscure fact that Max has a metal plate in his skull.
Max when asked where he keeps items he usually responds with "None of your business.".
He prefers to get up close and simply leap at his foes. This fails miserably about as often as it works; despite his boundless energy and love for comabt, Max isn't particularly good at fighting.
The CommissionerMusic for the ArticleThe Commissioner is the mysterious figure who gives Sam & Max their assignments. Normally, Sam is seen talking to the Commissioner on the phone,or in one case in season two Max was able to answer the call much to his and the Commissinors surprise. There are other methods that he has used to get a hold of Sam & Max, such as postcards, notes tied to bricks, and conch shells.
