Away we go

Plot
The film opens with a young couple, Verona De Tessant and Burt Farlander ,in bed and about to become intimante. However, Burt soon notices that Verona "tastes" differently, and explains to her that it might be a potential sign that she is pregnant. She then promptly slaps him across the face in disbelief, causing him to tumble out of the bed.

About 6 months later, we find Verona well into her pregnancy with a baby girl, and Burt trying to find ways to make himself a good parent for their newcoming baby (trying to take on skills like carpentry and woodcarving, which he mistakes as "cobbling", the craft of shoemaking). They begin to analyze their lives, wondering if they are "screwups", as they are both in their early 30's and still struggling to provide an actual home and demands to meet their daily needs and fulfilling lives (and also unmarried, as Verona fails to see the point in doing so). They then visit their only family in the area, Burt's parents, Gloria and Jerry (Verona's parents died 10 years before, while she was in college), only to find out that they have decided to move to Antwerp, Belgium a month before the baby is due, as it's been a goal in their lives for over 15 years and they finally see the route that they can do it. Frustrated at their selfishness and ill-thinking, Verona and Burt decide it's best to try and find somewhere else to live and to raise their family, as they have no other reason to stay in the area now that Burt's parents are leaving.

Burt and Verona head to the airport and travel around the country to visit old acquaintances and family in searching for their perfect new home. They first visit Phoenix, Arizona, meeting up with Verona's old boss, Lily, and her family: her husband, Lowell, and their two children, Taylor and Ashley. Despite the initial warm greetings, their belligerent and rather irresponsible parenting begins to show through while at a greyhound race track, as Lily openly mocks the imperfections of her children (particularly disturbing Burt), an uncomfortable dinner conversation after the races, followed by Lily's awkward attempts at coming on to Burt as she kisses him right before they are about to leave.

They then take a brief detour to Tucson, Arizona to visit Verona's sister, Grace, so that she may get to talk a bit about the new baby, and also so that Burt can convince Grace to continue her relationship with her current lover, as Verona knows they seem to be having relationship troubles. Burt tries to help Grace at Verona's suggestion, as she knows Grace is very fond of Burt, and she thinks he might be able to persuade her. Grace comments that Verona is extremely lucky to have a man like Burt, to which she replies, "I know."

The couple then visits one of Burt's acquaintances, a woman by the name of Ellen (who has abbreviated her name as "LN"), a college professor in Madison, WI, with incredibly radical views about parenting, as they initially walk in on her breast-feeding her children in her office, one of whom well past his age of needing to be breast-fed. They then stop by at their house later for dinner, bringing a stroller as a gift and as a sign of appreciation, which greatly angers LN, as she is extremely remorseful against strollers and "pushing" her children away from her. After heated arguments with LN and her also-radical husband, Roderick, Verona and Burt leave, frustrated, but not before Burt takes the stroller inside and gives their oldest child, Wolfie, a ride in the stroller, in defiance of LN's radical parenting.

After the awkward encounters in Arizona, Burt and Verona then decide to visit old college friends living in Montreal, Tom and Munch Garrett, to which they are overjoyed at their diverse and delightful family, as it is apparent that Tom and Munch have also adopted several children as well. After meeting their children, the group heads out to a restaurant and a night on the town to catch up, eventually leading them to an "Amateur" bar with nubile dancers, of which Munch is an active participant. Uncomforted by this, Burt and Verona are left even more confused at what love truly means, and where they truly should find their home for their new family.

Suddenly, Burt receives a call from his brother, Courtney, in Miami, who tells Burt that his wife has left him. They fly out to his home to comfort him through the situation, with Courtney worrying mostly about his young daughter, Annabelle, and the potential affects that it might have on her future if she has left them both, for good. Burt confides Courtney and tries to comfort him, while Verona spends her time with Annabelle trying to keep her company and entertained, playing with her in the yard and singing to her at night before she goes to bed. Burt, and Verona are dismayed at why such a charming and lovely young girl should have to live the rest of her life without the comfort of her mother.

While sitting outside in the yard, Verona then recounts a story about her father trying to grow an orange tree in the yard of their old house, to not much success. So, Verona, her mother, and her sisters went out with pineapples and various other fruits, duct tape, and string, and hung up the fruits on the tree to please their father, making him laugh considerably. She remembers this fondly, causing the couple to then travel to her old home, and realizing that it truly is the place that they should make as their new home
