What is a "Buddy Robot"?

The character is an artificially intelligent robot.

This kind of character is often good looking and has a million and one functions; if you need him to do a job, he has the right tool installed for it. Up to and including jet packs.

Typically, they are very loyal to their owners, requesting only proper maintenance like recharges and repairs. The trend in recent years is to make the Robot Buddy an obnoxious, cynical Snarker, commenting on human quirks (or just those of the protagonist). Some have a lack of intelligence or understanding of the world around them.

Whenever the robot runs into trouble, it has exactly the gadget it needs to get it out. No matter how strange or unlikely the situation, the robot simply has to retract an arm or open a panel, and out comes a gadget that seems to have been added for exactly that purpose, No matter what the situation, no matter who the foe, this robot will always protect the people he considers to be his friend.
